Getting to the Devon County Show
Devon County Council is highly supportive of cycling and walking, investing in infrastructure to sustain and promote such activities.
Traffic management planning for the Devon County Show is a complex and challenging exercise requiring significant actions to build scope to maintain traffic flows as far as possible and balance the huge influx of visitors against their chosen modes of travel in the wider interests of public safety.
By cycle – Devon County Show Cycle diversion in place
Over many years it has been necessary to take out of operation the pedestrian/cyclist controlled ‘Toucan’ crossing on the A376 Sidmouth Road between Sandygate and Clyst St Mary roundabouts.
Experience illustrates that operation of this crossing during the County Show results in significant queues of traffic developing back onto the southbound carriageway of the M5. This invariably leads to stationary traffic queuing from Junction 30 back beyond Junction 29 in live lanes. Clearly, this is a dangerous occurrence on the motorway and presents significant road safety risks which require mitigation.
A safe, well signed pedestrian and cycle friendly route has been developed for use by those wishing to attend the County Show on foot or by bicycle avoiding the need to cross the A376 at the location where this Toucan crossing is located.
