Tour of Britain returns to Devon in 2018!
Here are some ideas to make the most of the race at your business and engage your staff:
1. Watch the race from the roadside
Is your workplace near Barnstaple or Cranbrook? Why not organise a social ride to either the start or finish of the Devon stage. Organise a Dr. Bike* in advance of the ride to make sure all bikes are in good condition for the ride.
The British Cycling website gives some top tips for riding in a group.
Tip: If you can’t watch the Stage 2 from the road side, remember that ITV4 will be giving live coverage of the whole stage throughout the day and will be broadcasting an hour long highlights programme that evening.
2. Encourage cycling to work
To mark the event, encourage staff to cycle to work on Monday, 3rd September. You could offer a cycle to work breakfast* on arrival.
Tip: Are any of your staff new or returning to cycling? Encourage them to brush up their skills and boost their confidence with free cycle confidence sessions (excluding Torbay and Plymouth). For group cycle confidence training at your business, please get in touch.
3. Workplace Cycle challenge
The Tour of Britain Devon stage is a great start to Cycle September, a friendly competition between organisations to see which workplaces/business can get the most staff to try riding a bike, in Devon, nationally and this year even globally. It is a free and fun way to encourage people to cycle to work (more) which has various benefits for you as a workplace. So why not rally up your staff and register you and your workplace on www.lovetoride.net/devon. Contact Love to Ride Devon with any questions
Tip: Organise an internal competition among colleagues with prizes for top workplace encourager and top new rider the day/month*.
4. Business networking with other local businesses
Some ideas to use the Tour of Britain Devon stage as an opportunity for a themed networking event:
- Organise to cycle over to the start/ finish with other businesses
- Invite neighbouring businesses to watch (part of) the race (e.g. the start or finish) at your premises
- Plan a networking social ride during the lunch break or after work
A great example of this is the Michelmores Cycle Network. Their next ride will be on Friday, 31st August 2018.
Tip: Encourage those people who don’t have bikes to cycle by hiring some bikes for the day*.
5. PR for your business
The Tour of Britain can provide some great opportunities to put your business in the spotlight by posting about your engagement with the tour on social media. You can follow and tag Devon Tour of Britain on Facebook or Twitter.
Tip: Social media posts about your Tour of Britain workplace engagement and mention how your business is supporting cycling to work = Good for your green credentials!
6. Sign up to the Travel Devon Toolkit
Our online portal is a one-stop shop for businesses to support them with transport, both for the staff commute and during the working
day. The toolkit has handy advice notes, a travel survey facility and the ability to unlock grants.
Tip: Businesses in Barnstaple, Exeter and Newton Abbot can sign up on the Travel Devon toolkit and apply for match funding! All tips marked with * are eligible.
