There are regular local train services linking many parts of Devon, with some superb scenic journeys.

The Riviera Line runs from Exeter to Paignton via Dawlish, Teignmouth, Newton Abbot and Torquay, with excellent views of the Exe and Teign Estuaries and out to sea. This route passes along the famous Dawlish Sea Wall.

The Tarka Line runs from Barnstaple to Exeter via the attractive Taw Valley and Crediton.

The Avocet Line runs from Exmouth to Exeter via Topsham, with picturesque views from the eastern side of the Exe estuary.

The Tamar Valley Line runs from Plymouth to Bere Alston and Gunnislake, with scenic delights such as Calstock Viaduct to enjoy.

The Dartmoor Line runs from Exeter to Okehampton via Crediton and provides an easy link to Dartmoor for leisure activities.

The East Devon Line runs from Exeter to Axminster via Honiton with views of the charming East Devon countryside. The line continues on to Salisbury and London Waterloo.

Approximate travel times

Devon also has fast and frequent rail services to London, Birmingham and beyond – allowing easy access to the whole of the UK, and even Europe via the Channel Tunnel.

  • Exeter to London Paddington – two hours
  • Plymouth to London – three hours
  • Exeter to Birmingham – two hours 30 minutes
